Guided Tour Of The Falls

Gallery · 19 photos

A guided tour of Victoria Falls is the quintessential experience of any trip to the region. While the park is easy enough to walk on your own, a guided tour adds a layer of storytelling covering the geology, local legends, and the history of David Livingstone that brings the "Smoke that Thunders" to life. The tour primarily takes place within the Victoria Falls National Park (Zimbabwe side), which contains about 75% of the falls' viewpoints. You will follow a well-maintained network of paved paths roughly 2km/1.2 miles that wind through a lush rainforest kept alive year-round by the constant spray. There are 16 distinct viewpoints which include the Livingstone Statue : where the famous explorer first gazed upon the falls, the Main Falls which is the largest, most powerful curtain of water, the Rainbow Falls which is the highest point of the falls, famous for the permanent rainbows arched over the abyss and the Danger Point: A rocky ledge that looks directly down into the boiling pot and toward the Victoria Falls Bridge, amongst others.

Travel tip

  • High Water (Feb–May) comes with the "Shower" Factor so prepare to get soaked. The spray is so intense it feels like a tropical rainstorm. You won't be able to see the bottom of the gorge, but the power is visceral. With low water (Sept–Dec) The spray clears, offering crystal-clear views of the rock formations and the 108-meter drop.
  • If your visit falls during a Full Moon, you can book a special "Lunar Rainbow" tour at night, one of the few places on Earth where this phenomenon occurs.
  • Wear shoes with good grip. The mist makes the stones around the viewpoints incredibly slippery, especially at "Danger Point."
